Accessibility
FREE in Austin is built to be usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or captions.
What we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We test this site regularly, we fix what we find, and we check again after every change to the way the site is built.
What that means in practice
- Every page starts with a skip link, so a keyboard user can jump straight to the content.
- Images carry text descriptions, and decorative artwork is hidden from screen readers rather than read aloud.
- Text and controls meet contrast minimums, and focus is always visible when you tab through a page.
- Animation respects your system setting for reduced motion.
- Events are published as real text, not as a picture of a calendar.
Services we do not control
Parts of this site link out to services run by other companies, including Substack, Ko-fi, Google Calendar and Dropbox. We cannot fix those, but we can work around them. If one of them is blocking you, tell us and we will get you the same information another way.
Tell us if something is hard to use
If anything here is hard to use, email freeinaustin@gmail.com. Say what happened and what you were trying to do. We read every message and we will reply within a few business days.
If you need an event listing, a resource, or an issue of the weekly email in another format, just ask and we will send it.
